Do Lagging Altcoins Catch Up After Bitcoin Rallies?
A lagging altcoin is not automatically the next winner after Bitcoin rallies. In the frozen 2020–September 2026 Binance study, 739/2,801 complete mature-history lagging observations (26.4%) restored the pre-rally ALT/BTC ratio at the 30-day exit; 738/1,477 temporary daily-close recoveries faded. The 2,801 rows share just 32 BTC events. Waiting for confirmation often bought later and higher, and its paired intervals did not establish a reliable advantage. Compare relative recovery, net dollar profit and liquidity separately—not as a live buy ranking.

Do lagging altcoins really catch up after Bitcoin rallies?
- 738/1477 temporary daily-close recoveries ended below the relative baseline; a first touch is not lasting catch-up.
- Above-SMA20 recovery 30.6% versus 20.3% below: descriptive, not a validated buy filter.
- Compare immediate entry, two confirmation rules and holding BTC on the same initial cohort; unentered cash is included.
- 18 different dated coin cases, six in each main path category; historical illustrations, not a buy ranking.
What should you check before buying a lagging altcoin?
Before buying a lagging altcoin, check whether relative strength has improved, how much price has already advanced and whether a recovered ratio survives—not simply whether the coin has been flat. In the 2,801 complete historical observations, 52.7% touched their old ALT/BTC ratio at a daily close, but 738/1477 (50.0%) of those ended below it at the 30-day exit. Above-SMA20 markets recovered at the exit in 30.6% of cases versus 20.3% at/below it; this is descriptive, not a validated buy filter. Relative/trend confirmation raised entered cases' median price by 4.5%; adding breakout and volume raised it by 11.5%. More confirmation was not a free improvement.
Use this evidence as a three-part checklist: distinguish an absolute downtrend from improving price structure; measure how much price has already moved while you waited; then monitor whether the ALT/BTC recovery survives. Do not treat a low price, previous strength or a one-day relative recovery as an automatic bargain.
The broad study contains 2,801 complete mature-history observations, not 2,801 independent rallies. These policy tests are retrospective and complete-case. Twelve mature unknown paths and 55 pending observations remain in the original ledger; none is reclassified as a zero-return trade.
| Decision question | Measured evidence | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Is the price trend repaired? | Above SMA20: 505/1648 (30.6%) recovered; below: 234/1153 (20.3%). | A descriptive watchlist distinction, not a causal or validated entry rule. |
| Does confirmation improve the purchase price? | Relative/trend entry median +4.5%; stricter entry +11.5% versus the initial open. | Confirmation trades uncertainty for a later price; count missed moves and unentered cash. |
| Is the first recovery durable? | 738/1477 (50.0%) of close-recovered cases ended below the baseline. | First recovery and sustained relative value are different; this does not prescribe an optimized exit. |
Are lagging altcoins worth buying instead of Bitcoin after a BTC rally?
Do not turn a cheaper-looking altcoin into a replacement for BTC just because it has not yet followed a rally. In this frozen study, 739 of 2,801 complete lagging observations (26.4%) had restored the pre-rally ALT/BTC ratio at the common 30-day exit. That ratio is a relative endpoint, not the chance that a newly selected coin will gain in USDT or outperform after fees.
The policy comparison starts with the same 2,801 allocations and keeps unentered cash in the denominator. Its event-paired 95% intervals for the tested confirmation rules versus immediate altcoin entry include zero. BTC is also shown as a common comparator, but a BTC rally appears repeatedly across different coins, so 2,801 rows are not 2,801 independent BTC events. This evidence does not establish that switching from BTC into laggards—or refusing all altcoins—is a reliably superior portfolio policy.
For a current decision, separate three tasks. Downside-resilience data ask whether a coin lost less on the same days BTC fell; this study asks whether an already lagging ALT/BTC ratio later recovered after a BTC rally; neither measures that coin's product quality, token supply or your future execution price. A coin can pass one comparison and fail the other. Check the current liquidity and token-specific thesis before deciding whether extra concentration and drawdown risk are justified.

A temporary catch-up is not the same as keeping the gain
A recovered ALT/BTC ratio can fail again: 738/1477 observations with a daily-close recovery ended below the original ratio at the common 30-day exit. Another 739 were recovered at the exit, potentially after interim setbacks. These path categories are assigned after observing the historical path; they cannot classify a future winner at entry or serve as an optimized sell trigger.
The baseline is the ALT/BTC close ratio seven days before the BTC rally signal. Daily-close touches are measured during the holding interval; the final state uses the common exit open. Relative failure is not necessarily a dollar-price loss, and relative recovery can happen while both coins fall.
| Historical path | Count / full cohort | Definition |
|---|---|---|
| Recovered at the exit | 739/2801 (26.4%) | At least one daily-close recovery and the exit ratio is still recovered. |
| Recovered, then ended below | 738/2801 (26.3%) | At least one daily-close recovery, but the exit ratio is below the original baseline. |
| No recorded recovery | 1324/2801 (47.3%) | No daily-close recovery and no recovery at the exit open. |
| Recovered only at exit open | 0/2801 (0.0%) | No earlier daily-close recovery; only the final open meets the baseline. |
Was it previously strong, or already losing relative strength?
Being a previous relative leader did not ensure catch-up in this sample. In the frozen four-cell comparison, positive-prior-ALT/BTC markets recovered in 61/352 cases when price was at/below SMA20 and 171/609 when above it; neither fraction is a future buy probability. Compare all four cells rather than selecting the most attractive one after seeing outcomes.
Prior relative strength measures the thirty days ending before the BTC rally week: ratio(t−7)/ratio(t−37)−1. It is crossed with signal-close price above or at/below SMA20, using information available at the initial decision. This separates earlier relative trend from the very week that defines the laggard; overlapping descriptive groups are not independent validation.
The expected story—previous leaders only need a pause before another rally—did not uniformly hold. All four predeclared cells are shown. The strongest-looking cell is not selected afterward as a recommendation; coin composition, volatility and market regime can explain the difference. These overlapping descriptive comparisons have no causal interpretation.
| Pre-rally relative background | Signal-day price | Observations / BTC events | 30d recovered | Immediate median net |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flat/negative prior ALT/BTC | At/below SMA20 | 801 / 31 | 173/801 (21.6%) | -1.65% |

Buy now, wait for confirmation, or keep Bitcoin?
Neither tested waiting rule established a reliable full-period advantage over immediate altcoin entry: its equal-event mean difference was −1.86 pp for relative/trend confirmation and −4.70 pp for the stricter rule, with both paired intervals spanning zero. The BTC comparison interval also spans zero. The frozen evidence compares trade-offs; it does not select a reliable best allocation for the next rally.
All policies start from the same 2,801 complete lagging observations and end at the same original t+31 UTC open. A waiting policy checks seven completed closes, t through t+6 inclusive. It enters at the next open after the first qualifying close. If it never qualifies, that allocation remains non-interest-bearing USDT cash: its policy return is genuinely zero, not a missing observation filled with zero.
Relative/trend confirmation requires ALT/BTC three-day momentum >0 AND close>SMA20. The stricter variant also requires close above every previous 20 daily close AND signal-day quote turnover at least 1.5× the previous-20-day median. The initial signal close itself can qualify; zero waiting days is valid. Missing/zero volume baselines cannot pass the volume test.
Both traded assets pay 0.20% each side. Waiting means fewer days invested, not an equal holding-duration comparison. There is no interest during the cash wait, switching from BTC, funding, tax, capital recycling or compounding. Daily opens are execution proxies, not promises of fills.
The primary comparison includes every original allocation, including no-entry cash. Positive-trade percentages restricted to entries are secondary and cannot replace this denominator. BTC is repeated across coins for alignment; the event-weighted mean counts each BTC event once.

Waiting filtered trades—but often bought at a higher price
The relative/trend policy entered 1,906 of 2,801 allocations, typically 2 days later, at a median +4.49% price change from the original next open. The stricter policy entered 712, typically 3 days later, after a median +11.48% move. Entry change is descriptive; a lower price is possible in an individual case.
MAE/MFE below are the lowest/highest price-relative returns after entry, using daily lows/highs through the day before the exit plus the exit open, with the same round-trip cost factor. They are not portfolio drawdowns or attainable intraday fills. Entered-only medians compare selected cohorts with different holding durations, so smaller adverse excursion is not proof that confirmation caused lower risk.
Across all initial allocations, neither confirmation policy established a reliable full-period improvement: the event-paired confidence intervals against immediate entry include zero. A more selective rule may leave capital idle and miss rebounds while still losing on trades it accepts.

Did the confirmation rules behave the same in later years?
The waiting policies behaved differently in the later segment, which is a reason not to market the pooled result as a durable edge. The January 2024–cutoff segment has only 12 BTC events: confirmation beat immediate altcoin entry descriptively but still lagged the event-weighted BTC comparator. Its uncertainty intervals are withheld under the twenty-event requirement.
The split date is January 1, 2024, with unchanged rules and thresholds. Earlier full-period summaries had already been inspected, so this is chronological robustness—not an untouched out-of-sample trial. A later-period reversal cannot validate a rule selected using the whole sample.
The later period has only 12 BTC events, below the 20-event requirement for our clustered confidence intervals. Confirmation did better than immediate entry descriptively in that segment, but still lagged the event-weighted BTC comparator. This reversal across periods is a reason not to market one pooled result as a durable advantage.

How quickly could a recovered ALT/BTC ratio fail again?
First recovery was often fragile: 784/1431 first-recovered observations with full three-day follow-up had a later close below the baseline; the seven-day count was 905/1363. Those denominators exclude recoveries too late for full follow-up and cannot be replaced by the full 2,801-entry cohort. Losing the level once does not mean permanent failure; a coin can regain it later.
The clock starts at the first completed daily recovery close. Check each subsequent close against the same pre-rally ALT/BTC baseline, rather than restarting the baseline after a setback. This is a historical durability diagnostic, not a stop-loss backtest or a success probability for entering before recovery was known.
Late first recoveries without full follow-up are reported separately. These are conditional historical path statistics, not the success rate of an entry placed before the recovery was known. There is no assumed sale at a hindsight-selected peak.
| Follow-up after first recovery close | Full follow-up observations | At least one relative setback | Touched but insufficient follow-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 days | 1431 | 784/1431 (54.8%) | 46 |

18 different coins: recoveries, reversals and persistent laggards
There are six distinct markets in each of three observed path categories. Within each category, sort by absolute distance from its median 30-day excess return, then observation ID, taking the first six globally unused symbols. The fixed category order is exit-recovered, recovered-then-ended-below, then never-recovered. This intentionally illustrates different paths; an equal six-per-category display does not estimate their real-world frequency.
These are dated historical examples, not a present-day top-18 buy list or fundamental recommendations. The charts show real daily prices and turnover, not synthetic average paths. Each case supplies the original date, indicators, alternative entry times and common-exit returns.

JST: waiting bought higher even though relative recovery survived
JST illustrates successful historical catch-up that later confirmation bought at a worse reference price. The frozen case restored its ratio by the common exit, but the stricter policy missed entry entirely; success does not mean every waiting rule participated.
At the 2021-07-26T00:00:00Z decision, JST lagged BTC by 12.10 percentage points over the rally week. Its earlier 30-day ALT/BTC change was -18.65% and price was at/below SMA20. Cutler RSI14 was 28.74; the signal-day volume ratio was 2.24×. These describe the information then, not why the later result occurred.
The relative ratio recovered by the common exit; that does not imply an uninterrupted recovery. Immediate-entry net return was +66.75% versus BTC +34.21%. Relative/trend confirmation entered after 4 days at a +17.62% price change and returned +41.77%.
The stricter breakout/volume rule did not enter and remained in cash. This single episode is an illustration, not an estimate of this coin’s future success rate.

CLV: a successful catch-up that both confirmation rules missed
CLV restored its earlier ALT/BTC ratio in this dated case even though neither waiting rule entered in the seven-close scan. A no-entry allocation remained cash; its zero return is not missing data or a profitable CLV trade.
At the 2024-10-17T00:00:00Z decision, CLV lagged BTC by 11.13 percentage points over the rally week. Its earlier 30-day ALT/BTC change was -23.35% and price was at/below SMA20. AXS: confirmation participated, but at a higher entry price
AXS recovered relative value in this case, but both waiting rules entered later at the same higher price and earned less than immediate entry. Agreement between the rules was not an independent second trade or proof of causality.

ETC: high volume did not make confirmation free
ETC had strong signal-day turnover and recovered at the exit, but waiting still meant a higher purchase price. Identical later fills of both waiting rules are not evidence that turnover caused recovery.

APE: a previous leader recovered without the stricter condition
APE had positive earlier relative strength and recovered at exit, yet the stricter policy never entered. Low signal-day turnover was context, not proof that the coin could not recover.
At the 2024-11-16T00:00:00Z decision, APE lagged BTC by 15.07 percentage points over the rally week. Its earlier 30-day ALT/BTC change was +17.70% and price was above SMA20. Cutler RSI14 was 55.92; the signal-day volume ratio was 0.60×. These describe the information then, not why the later result occurred.
The relative ratio recovered by the common exit; that does not imply an uninterrupted recovery. Immediate-entry net return was +47.25% versus BTC +14.30%. Relative/trend confirmation entered after 1 day at a +5.97% price change and returned +38.96%.
The stricter breakout/volume rule did not enter and remained in cash. This single episode is an illustration, not an estimate of this coin’s future success rate.

DODO: a dollar gain still finished behind Bitcoin
DODO made an after-cost dollar gain but its temporary relative recovery faded before exit. BTC gained more in the same interval; being profitable was not the same as catching up.
At the 2023-10-21T00:00:00Z decision, DODO lagged BTC by 13.22 percentage points over the rally week. Its earlier 30-day ALT/BTC change was +1.36% and price was at/below SMA20. Cutler RSI14 was 26.81; the signal-day volume ratio was 0.42×. These describe the information then, not why the later result occurred.
A recovery was visible during the path but did not survive to the common exit; a temporary touch was not lasting catch-up. Immediate-entry net return was +23.01% versus BTC +25.42%. Relative/trend confirmation never qualified during the seven-close scan, so this policy stayed in cash with zero return.

ZRX: both assets fell after a temporary relative recovery
ZRX temporarily restored relative value but finished with a dollar loss and below the old ratio. Both waiting rules also lost; a recovered ratio and mid-range RSI did not guarantee protected capital.
At the 2021-11-09T00:00:00Z decision, ZRX lagged BTC by 9.15 percentage points over the rally week. Its earlier 30-day ALT/BTC change was -0.30% and price was above SMA20. STG: confirmation did not preserve an early recovery
STG briefly recovered but failed to retain the ratio. Both confirmation rules bought higher and finished worse than immediate entry on this dated path; the recovered close was not a durable-entry guarantee.

RVN: no recovery, and neither waiting rule entered
RVN never recovered the baseline during this path and lost more than BTC at exit. Both waiting rules stayed cash, showing avoided exposure but not proving the coin could never recover later.
At the 2021-06-15T00:00:00Z decision, RVN lagged BTC by 13.08 percentage points over the rally week. Its earlier 30-day ALT/BTC change was -28.59% and price was at/below SMA20. Does buying an altcoin that has not pumped actually work?
Not automatically. Across 2,801 complete lagging-market observations after BTC gained at least 10% in a week, 50.3% made a net profit after 30 days, 43.2% beat BTC, and only 26.4% recovered their pre-rally ALT/BTC ratio. The experiment searched 746 archived/current USDT pairs; 534 altcoin markets qualified at least once under historical rules. A coin that has not risen is not automatically owed a catch-up rally.
The laggard basket beat the other eligible coins in 14/32 paired BTC events. Its mean 30-day difference was -0.31 pp, with a quarterly clustered 95% interval of -3.67 to +3.52 pp. The paired interval includes zero: these data do not establish a reliable laggard-basket advantage.
The headline percentages describe complete 90-day-history markets, with a 0.20% cost allowance on each side. They are not future probabilities. 12 mature lagging observations had unmeasurable execution/path outcomes and 55 were pending; their separate ledger and missing-outcome bounds appear below.
| Holding window | Net profitable | Beat BTC | Full gap recovered | Profitable AND recovered | Median net return |

What is the difference between following BTC and true catch-up?
An altcoin can rise with Bitcoin while still losing relative value. We therefore test three different endpoints and disclose their denominators. The recovery test uses an actual price ratio rather than adding percentage-point return gaps across periods.
To measure the remaining relative gap, divide the pre-rally ALT/BTC ratio by the current ratio. If that quotient is above one, the required relative gain is quotient minus one, assuming an unchanged BTC price. If BTC continues rising, the altcoin must rise further in USDT to restore the same ratio. This is a measurement identity, not available upside or fair value; a damaged project is not obliged to close its historical gap.
Example: before the rally, both indexed prices are 100. BTC reaches 110 and the altcoin 103. If the altcoin then rises 5% while BTC rises 2%, it outperforms during the follow-up but still has not restored its original ALT/BTC ratio. Running faster for part of a race is not necessarily catching the leader. This is an illustration, not an experimental observation.
| Question | Definition |
|---|---|
| Did I make money? | Alt net return >0 after both execution costs. |
| Did it do better than holding BTC? | Alt net return − BTC net return >0 for the same next-open window and costs. |
| Did it recover the old relative gap? | ALT exit open / BTC exit open ≥ ALT close(t−7) / BTC close(t−7). This is a gross relative-price endpoint, not a dollar-profit condition. |
| Did both useful outcomes happen? | The altcoin finished net profitable AND recovered the pre-rally relative ratio. |
| Did it only touch recovery temporarily? | A completed close during the holding window crossed the same ratio baseline; reported separately from being recovered at the exit open. |
A historically discovered Binance universe—not a shortlist of winners
The study is broader than a hand-picked survivor list but not the entire crypto market. The official Binance monthly spot archive plus the current USDT directory produced 746 pair identifiers. After classification, 584 candidate series remain, including BTC and 583 target altcoin markets; 579 candidate series including BTC have in-window daily bars and five have none. A market means a symbol/venue series, not necessarily a distinct economic token.
Of the target altcoin markets, 394 are currently marked TRADING and 189 are non-TRADING or absent from today’s directory. Current status never determines past eligibility. 534 altcoin markets qualify for the mature-history group at least once; 456 contribute complete lagging observations.
The archive is a discovery source, not a complete historical listing and delisting registry. Its coverage and historical classification are imperfect. No cross-ticker histories are stitched. LUNA identity discontinuity, BCC ambiguity and USDSOLD ambiguity are quarantined with explicit reasons; this can exclude important historical failures and prevents a claim of survivor-bias-free coverage.
Stable-value currencies, fiat, tokenized equities/commodities, identified leverage products and identified wrapped benchmark exposure are excluded by classification, not subsequent performance. JUP, BNB and ARB are not removed merely because their names end in UP or B. Binance’s rebranded FRAX/FXS market is not automatically treated as the old FRAX stablecoin.

How the BTC rally, eligible market and catch-up outcome are defined
A tested catch-up opportunity starts with a completed BTC seven-day gain of at least 10%, followed by a historically liquid altcoin lagging that gain by at least five percentage points. Eligibility is decided at the signal close; next-open execution and the later relative recovery are separate stages. The following frozen protocol makes the outcome reproducible without choosing coins based on subsequent winners.
1. Use closed official UTC daily candles from September 1, 2020 through September 17, 2026 where available. Historical values were retrieved later; this is not a point-in-time record of what CoinNudge knew then.
2. A BTC event is a completed seven-day close-to-close gain of at least 10%. Keep the earliest qualifying event, then suppress further events for 30 days globally, before inspecting altcoin outcomes. Event time is the next UTC midnight, when the signal-day candle is complete.
3. At each event, inspect every discovered target market. Main eligibility requires 90 consecutive prior daily bars including the signal day, a trailing 30-day median USDT quote turnover of at least 1 million, and positive signal-day turnover. A laggard trails BTC’s seven-day return by at least 5 percentage points. Only information up to the signal close is used for eligibility.
4. Markets with only 30–89 consecutive available days use the same turnover rules but enter a separate short-history group. This measures available market history, not token age. A gap in an older series can also put it in this group; it is not a pure newly listed-token cohort.
5. Entry is the next UTC daily open; exits are the opens 7, 14 and 30 days afterward. Require positive recorded daily turnover at each execution date and throughout the shared 30-day path. This is evidence of a traded day, not proof that any size could fill at that exact open. Unavailable, zero-turnover and pending paths retain explicit statuses, never a made-up return.
6. Net return = exit × (1−0.002) / [entry × (1+0.002)] −1. Recovery means the exit ALT/BTC price ratio is at least its signal-minus-seven-day close ratio. All three headline horizons use the same complete 30-day cohort; unmatched or missing cases are not silently added to its denominator.
What about delisted coins, missing prices and unsuccessful exits?
Among 2,813 mature eligible lagging observations whose 30-day windows have elapsed, 2,801 have complete measurable paths and 12 do not. Another 55 eligible lagging observations have not reached the common 30-day cutoff.
If every unknown mature outcome failed to recover, the full mature-cohort recovery share would be 26.27%; if every unknown recovered, it would be 26.70%. This is a missing-outcome identification range, not a 95% confidence interval. It does not bound outcomes for assets absent from the discovered/classified universe.
A missing exit can reflect delisting, migration, feed coverage or another interruption. We do not infer its cause from the last candle, fill forward a last trade as an executable sale, or assume a −100% return. Return averages are therefore complete-case estimates and may still be selected; no synthetic all-market return is claimed.

More coins do not mean more independent Bitcoin rallies
The 2,801 complete mature lagging observations span 32 BTC events and 20 UTC quarters. Equal-weighting each coin observation gives a 30-day recovery share of 26.4%; giving each BTC event equal weight gives 25.4%. Larger later coin universes can otherwise dominate a pooled count.
Uncertainty resamples entire UTC quarters, preserving all within-quarter BTC events and cross-coin observations. First average coins within each event, then average events. The interval uses 1,000 draws, Python Random seed 18092026, sorted quarter keys and linear (n−1)p percentiles. Require at least 20 events and eight quarters. Dependence across quarters, data selection and nonstationarity remain limitations.

Would rotating into laggards beat coins that already moved?
Rotating into laggards did not establish a reliable basket advantage over other eligible coins here. At thirty days, laggards won 14/32 paired BTC-event comparisons; the event-balanced mean difference was −0.31 pp with a −3.67 to +3.52 pp quarterly-cluster interval. The interval includes zero; neither cheap-looking lag nor this pooled count identifies which coin to buy now.
For each BTC event, compare equal-weight complete laggards with other eligible complete markets at identical entry/exit times and costs, then weight events equally. Events missing one basket remain in the ledger without a fabricated zero difference. This tests a relative basket claim, not a funded rotation from an existing BTC position.
The paired interval includes zero: these data do not establish a reliable laggard-basket advantage. This is a contemporaneous comparison, not a causal matched control: sectors, volatility, supply and fundamentals can differ. Incomplete exits are not included in either complete-case basket. There is no funded, rebalanced or compounded portfolio behind these percentages.

Which technical indicators can describe a possible catch-up?
Price versus SMA20, simple RSI, relative quote volume and three-day ALT/BTC momentum describe different parts of a possible catch-up, but none was validated as an independent entry advantage. The four-condition conjunction recovered in 13/51 observations across only 17 BTC events, versus 739/2801 overall; more indicator agreement did not automatically produce a stronger tested rule.
All indicator values below are calculated at the initial signal close without future outcomes. The descriptive group comparison is distinct from the two waiting policies, which scan later closes for a first qualifying entry. Overlapping features and later entry prices prevent treating the indicator count as independent confirmation votes.
The RSI here is explicitly Cutler’s simple-average RSI, not Wilder’s recursive smoothing. BTC dominance, funding, open interest and on-chain flows were not inputs. This study cannot infer actual capital transfers or establish an altcoin-season trigger.
| Indicator | Exact definition | What it can and cannot tell you |
|---|---|---|
| SMA20 price position | Mean of close(t−19)…close(t), including the now-completed signal day. Above means close(t)>mean. | Describes absolute trend; price can be above its average while still underperforming BTC. |
| Cutler RSI(14) | 100 × mean positive close changes / (mean positive + mean absolute negative changes), using the last 14 changes. Flat denominator →50. | Simple momentum context. The preset middle-strength band is 50–70; not a guaranteed reversal or catch-up signal. |
| Relative quote volume | Signal-day USDT turnover / median turnover on t−20…t−1. Preset high-activity split:≥1.5×. | Activity, not net deposits. A high ratio alone does not prove buyer demand or future relative strength. |
| Three-day ALT/BTC momentum | [ALT close(t)/BTC close(t)] / [ALT close(t−3)/BTC close(t−3)] −1. | Shows whether relative weakness has started to improve; a positive short window does not erase a full-week gap. |
| Combined confirmation | Above SMA20 AND volume≥1.5× AND relative 3>0 AND Cutler RSI 50–70. | A fixed exploratory conjunction. Report the actual sample count; do not assume more indicators automatically create stronger evidence. |
Which signal-time features coincided with relative recovery?
The full four-feature agreement did not establish a stronger catch-up signal: 13/51 observations (25.5%) recovered at thirty days, versus 739/2801 (26.4%) across the mature lagging cohort. Above-SMA20 and high-volume subgroups differed descriptively, but the table does not prove independent predictive votes or a causal buy filter.
The fixed SMA20, Cutler RSI14, relative-volume and ALT/BTC-momentum rules are measured at the initial signal close. Groups overlap; compare counts and distinct BTC events as well as percentages. The conjunction includes only 17 BTC events and has no interval under the minimum-history rule.
Even a higher fraction in a subgroup would not prove predictive value: count distinct BTC events, account for overlapping tests and validate on later unseen data. The study did not tune these thresholds to maximize the new result. Missing volume baselines remain missing, not low-volume signals.
| Signal-time condition | Observations | BTC events | 30d recovered | Median net / excess |

Does the answer depend on today’s surviving coins?
The original fixed 15-altcoin edition is preserved as a sensitivity comparison, not erased or presented as broad coverage. The expanded universe changes composition and adds explicit positive-turnover path checks. Differences are not a clean causal estimate of survivor bias.
Current non-TRADING/absent status below is a present-day diagnostic only. It was not used to choose a market at a historical event and does not certify a formal delisting date. Short-history markets are shown separately and must not be added to the main mature-history headline.
| Cohort | Complete lagging observations | BTC events | 30d recovered | 30d median net |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Broad historical mature group | 2801 | 32 | 739/2801 (26.4%) | +0.23% |
| Original fixed 15-altcoin edition | 170 | 30 | 50/170 (29.4%) | +7.54% |
| Broad: currently TRADING | 1817 | 32 | 512/1817 (28.2%) | +2.38% |
| Broad: currently non-TRADING / absent | 984 | 32 | 227/984 (23.1%) | -2.72% |
| Separate 30–89-day available-history group | 314 | 32 | 57/314 (18.2%) | -0.54% |
Can newly available markets behave differently?
Short available-history markets did not justify a stronger catch-up claim: the separate cohort had 57/314 (18.2%) complete relative recoveries at thirty days. It contains 315 elapsed-window eligible lagging observations—314 complete paths and one unknown outcome—plus one pending observation. These are exploratory outcomes, not a new-coin recommendation ranking.
Newly listed markets often have less information and changing liquidity, but a short available history can also reflect a data gap. The separate ledger makes that limitation inspectable. This group uses the same 1 million USDT turnover floor, lag rule, costs and common 30-day path checks.
Did recovery differ across historical periods?
Recovery differed across dated segments: the 2025–cutoff group had 20/196 thirty-day recoveries across only five BTC events, compared with about 27.6% in each earlier displayed segment. That small recent-event count is a warning about precision, not proof the next market will behave the same way. Segment labels use the decision date, not future performance.
Universe size and coin composition changed materially over time, counts are unbalanced and repeated symbols are correlated. Per-symbol summaries are available in the frozen result rather than being turned into a current winner ranking. Historical period differences do not identify a causal market regime.
| Decision period | Observations | BTC events | Recovered | Median net / excess |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020–2022 | 1138 | 14 | 314/1138 (27.6%) | -12.62% / -1.37 pp |
| 2023–2024 | 1467 | 13 | 405/1467 (27.6%) | +7.98% / -2.77 pp |
| 2025–cutoff | 196 | 5 | 20/196 (10.2%) | -16.14% / -17.98 pp |
Does a larger Bitcoin rally or a bigger lag change the result?
The original preset variants are retained: BTC weekly gains of 5% or 15%, and lag thresholds of 2.5 or 10 percentage points. Every variant reselects BTC events with its own 30-day cooldown and repeats the same historical eligibility rules. These are different cohorts, not four estimates of identical trades.
All variants are published; none is selected afterward as the best strategy. Their full mature missing-outcome bounds and separate short-history summaries are in the JSON. Intervals are withheld below the minimum event/quarter count.

Can trading costs turn catch-up into an unprofitable trade?
Yes: the same complete mature cohort's thirty-day median net return changes from +0.23% at a 0.20% per-side allowance to −0.37% at 0.50% per side. Gross relative recovery remains 739/2801 in both cases because restoring the ALT/BTC ratio does not pay fees. A small apparent advantage can disappear after costs.
All cost alternatives preserve the frozen cohort rather than optimizing the coins again. The buy-side allowance increases purchase basis and the sell-side allowance reduces proceeds. Compare your expected costs separately; the model allowance is not an account-specific venue quote.
Daily opens and positive daily turnover do not measure spread, order-book capacity, taxes or actual fills. A weak or exiting market may be especially hard to trade, so the model is not an attainable-profit promise.
| Cost per side | Median 30d net | Net profitable | Gross relative recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.10% | +0.43% | 1419/2801 (50.7%) | 739/2801 (26.4%) |
| 0.20% | +0.23% | 1408/2801 (50.3%) | 739/2801 (26.4%) |
| 0.30% | +0.03% | 1402/2801 (50.1%) | 739/2801 (26.4%) |
| 0.50% | -0.37% | 1389/2801 (49.6%) | 739/2801 (26.4%) |
How should you use this before buying a coin that has not moved?
Use lag as a question to investigate, not a buy signal: the current coin needs an independently credible thesis and executable liquidity before the historical comparison becomes useful. Record venue, timestamp, common BTC/alt return window and maximum time willing to wait. A low unit price or flat dollar chart is not evidence of a discount.
Calculate ALT/BTC against the same dated baseline, then inspect completed-bar relative momentum, absolute trend and depth at your size. If the ratio remains weak, a breakout fails or supply/news undermines the thesis, no trade or retaining the benchmark is a valid alternative. Resetting the baseline after each failure hides underperformance. These monitoring checks are not a newly backtested combined rule.
Then investigate fundamentals separately: dated project news, circulating supply and scheduled releases, concentration and liquidity. Our technical experiment does not measure fair value or explain why each token lagged. A justified repricing can persist; there is no rule that every coin is owed a rally.
Do not wait indefinitely because catch-up sounds inevitable. The frozen waiting policies expire after seven decision closes and end all comparisons at a common thirty-day endpoint; neither tests extending a losing trade or averaging down until recovery. BTC dominance and sector flows concern different universes and were not inputs here, so their changes cannot be credited with these results.
For an AI prompt such as “Bitcoin is up but my altcoin is not—should I rotate?”, specify the symbol, venue, timestamp, return window and holding horizon. Ask it to distinguish dollar gains, excess returns and full relative recovery, show dated sources, count non-recoveries, and explain what would invalidate the catch-up thesis. The historical statistics here are evidence for that discussion, not a personal trade instruction.

Download inputs.json.gz, broad_altcoin_catchup.py and altcoin_catchup_study.py into the same folder. Run: python broad_altcoin_catchup.py inputs.json.gz reproduced.json. Python’s standard library reproduces the headline, eligibility, young-market group, missing bounds, indicators, paired baskets, threshold sensitivities, costs and seeded intervals. Inputs are compressed for download; the article does not load them automatically.
universe.csv lists every discovered pair, classification, current status, acquisition error and first/last observed daily bar. These dates are observations, not official listing/delisting dates. eligibility-ledger.csv includes every candidate/event check. observations.csv has one complete market/event/horizon per row; use cohort=mature90 AND lagger=True for headline counts. Short-history observations remain explicitly labelled.
research.json includes all grouped results and the primary row ledger. Event time identifies historical market time; observed_at and request logs identify later acquisition. Retrospective inputs are not PIT capture. No unknown return is set to zero, and hashes verify the frozen files rather than proving a market feed correct.

Reproduce the confirmation decisions—not just the headline
Download the original v2 inputs.json.gz and research.json, plus the three Python files linked here, into one folder. Run: python catchup_confirmation.py inputs.json.gz research.json reproduced-confirmation.json. The script uses only the standard library. The old broad-universe experiment and files are unchanged.
confirmation-scan.csv contains all seven decision-close states for every complete mature laggard, including nonqualifying days. policy-outcomes.csv contains four policies per original observation, including no-entry cash. recovery-paths.csv exposes first recovery, follow-up availability and path category. All quotes and timestamps are historical; they are not original point-in-time capture.
All-allocation means first average the coins within each BTC event, then weight events equally. Paired differences use identical original observations. The same UTC-quarter bootstrap contract applies: 1,000 draws, seed 18092026, sorted quarters, linear percentiles, at least 20 events and eight quarters. The later period is not a blind validation set. A larger case gallery does not increase the number of independent BTC events.

Frequently asked questions
Should I buy a lagging altcoin instead of Bitcoin after BTC rises?
A low relative price is not enough. In this historical cohort, 739/2801 (26.4%) had restored the earlier ALT/BTC ratio at the 30-day exit; that is not a future win probability. The tested confirmation policies did not establish a reliable full-cohort improvement over immediate entry. Compare liquidity, token-specific risk and your own exposure rather than treating lag alone as an allocation signal.
Do altcoins always catch up after Bitcoin pumps?
No. The broad mature-history cohort recovered in 739/2801 complete lagging observations after 30 days; 1408/2801 made a net profit. These are different endpoints and not future probabilities.
Why is Bitcoin rising while my altcoin is not?
BTC strength does not require every coin to follow. Liquidity, supply and project-specific news need separate investigation. This study measures lag and later performance; it does not establish why a particular token lagged.
How long did relative catch-up take?
In the same complete mature cohort, 354/2801 were recovered at 7 days, 629/2801 were recovered at 14 days, 739/2801 were recovered at 30 days. These are endpoint counts, not an expected waiting time or proof that longer holding causes recovery.
Can an altcoin rise and still fail to catch up?
Yes. A positive USDT return, a higher return than BTC during the holding window and restoration of the earlier ALT/BTC ratio are three distinct tests. Relative recovery itself can also occur during losses if BTC falls faster.
Does the sample include inactive or delisted markets?
The target universe contains 189 altcoin symbols currently non-TRADING or absent. Current status is never a historical entry filter. However, archive discovery is not a complete delisting registry; ambiguous symbols and unavailable histories are disclosed, not silently reconstructed.
Does this study include new coins?
Markets with 30–89 consecutive available days are analysed separately at the same liquidity floor. Fewer than 30 days is insufficient. Available history is not token age, and these rows do not enter the mature-group headline.
Does a larger lag mean more upside is available?
Not necessarily. The published 2.5, 5 and 10 percentage-point lag sensitivities test different cohorts; a previous relative loss is not a claim on future gains. Fundamental impairment can persist.
How are missing or delisting exits handled?
12 mature eligible lagging outcomes are unknown and 55 remain pending. Unknowns are not zero returns or assumed losses. The mature recovery identification range is 26.27%–26.70%, distinct from statistical confidence intervals.
Can researchers reproduce the broad study?
Yes. The compressed candles, full universe and exclusion ledger, BTC events, eligibility, outcome CSV, paired baskets, chart paths, Python scripts and hashes are public downloads. Acquired historical data are retrospective, not point-in-time capture.
Does CoinNudge automatically buy lagging altcoins?
No. This page is independent historical research, not an execution bot. Inspect the Telegram alert checklist or data-service samples separately. Neither the article nor an alert guarantees catch-up or profits.
Should I wait for confirmation before buying a lagging altcoin?
In the full 2,801-observation cohort, the relative/trend rule entered 1906 cases and the stricter breakout/volume rule 712. Median entry changes were +4.49% and +11.48%. Their paired full-period intervals versus immediate entry included zero: confirmation was more selective, not a proven free improvement.
What signals are worth checking when an altcoin lags BTC?
Signal-day price above SMA20 coincided with 30.6% recovery versus 20.3% at/below it. We also test ALT/BTC three-day momentum, a prior-20-close breakout and 1.5× quote-volume confirmation. The groups are descriptive, and waiting may buy at a higher price.
How often did a temporary catch-up fade?
738/1477 observations that recovered at a daily close ended below the original ratio at the common exit. Among 1363 first recoveries with full seven-day follow-up, 905 had at least one subsequent close below it; some later recovered again. These are different denominators and neither is a trading win rate.
Which coins are shown in the historical case gallery?
JST, CLV, AXS, AXL, ETC, APE, DODO, ZRX, STG, RAY, BNX, ZEC, RVN, UMA, BAR, TORN, BURGER, BAND. Six examples per path category are selected mechanically near each category’s median excess return, with distinct symbols. They are not recommendations or representative frequency estimates.
Was the later-period result tested on unseen data?
No. The January 2024 split is a chronological robustness check after full-period summaries had already been inspected. The later segment contains only 12 BTC events; its intervals are withheld by the minimum-history rule. True prospective validation remains outstanding.
