Current source-backed snapshot
This page shows Bitcoin's current share of CoinGecko's aggregated cryptocurrency market capitalization beside Ethereum, the named USDT-plus-USDC subtotal and all remaining assets. Percentage-point changes use CoinNudge's own timestamped observations over one, seven and 30 days; a window stays blank until a sufficiently aligned baseline exists. Rising BTC dominance describes changing market-cap share, not necessarily rising Bitcoin price or falling altcoin prices.

Dominance depends on CoinGecko's asset coverage, supply estimates and classification. USDT + USDC is a named two-asset subtotal, not all stablecoins. Local change windows remain blank until a sufficiently aligned observation exists.
How to read this page
- Dominance is market-cap share, not Bitcoin's price return.
- Changes are percentage points, not percentage returns.
- USDT plus USDC is a named subtotal rather than a claim about every stablecoin.
- Altcoin Season and breadth provide separate relative-performance evidence.
What can this page tell you quickly?
- Best for
- Seeing whether crypto market capitalization is concentrating in Bitcoin.
- Source
- CoinGecko global market-cap aggregation with local hourly history.
- Windows
- Current, 1 day, 7 days and 30 days when aligned baselines exist.
- Do not infer
- Rising dominance does not automatically mean every altcoin is falling.
What is inside the Bitcoin-dominance denominator?
The denominator is CoinGecko's aggregated cryptocurrency market capitalization at the source observation time. It depends on the provider's tracked asset set, circulating-supply estimates and current prices. CoinNudge does not substitute Binance trading volume, fully diluted valuation or a self-selected token list for that denominator.
Because new assets, revised supplies and classification changes can alter the aggregate, dominance can move slightly without a single dramatic trade. The page therefore names the provider, observation time and active-cryptocurrency count. A provider share is a reproducible market-structure estimate, not an immutable fact about every crypto asset in existence.
| Displayed segment | Calculation | What the label excludes |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin | Provider BTC market-cap percentage | BTC price return |
| Ethereum | Provider ETH market-cap percentage | All smart-contract platforms |
| USDT + USDC | Sum of two named provider shares | Every stablecoin |
| Other assets | 100 minus the three named components | An equal-weight altcoin index |
Which data should confirm a Bitcoin-dominance change?
Market breadth answers how many eligible liquid coins are participating, while the Altcoin Season page compares each selected altcoin's completed 90-day return with Bitcoin. Sector heatmaps show whether relative strength is broad or concentrated in one theme. Those datasets use different denominators and should remain separate rather than being averaged into an unexplained regime score.
For example, rising dominance with weak breadth can describe concentration in Bitcoin, but rising dominance with positive breadth may simply mean Bitcoin advanced faster than a broadly rising market. CoinNudge treats agreement and conflict as context. Neither combination supplies a guaranteed rotation trade.
What does rising Bitcoin dominance actually mean?
Bitcoin's market capitalization became a larger share of the provider's total universe. This can happen because BTC rose faster, fell less, or because supply and valuation changes affected other assets.
The measure is relative. Bitcoin can fall in dollars while dominance rises if the rest of the market falls more, and Bitcoin can rise while dominance falls if altcoins rise faster.
| BTC price | BTC dominance | Possible relative condition | Not proven |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up | Up | BTC outpaced the aggregate | Every altcoin fell |
| Down | Up | BTC may have fallen less | Bitcoin was profitable |
| Up | Down | Other assets may have risen faster | A durable alt season |
| Down | Down | Other share held up better | Broad market strength |
How is Bitcoin dominance different from the Altcoin Season Index?
Dominance is market-cap weighted and responds heavily to the largest assets. CoinNudge's Altcoin Season page gives each eligible liquid altcoin one vote based on 90-day performance versus BTC.
The two can disagree because one measures capitalization share and the other measures breadth. That disagreement is useful context, not a defect to be averaged away.
Why does CoinNudge maintain its own dominance history?
The free global endpoint provides the current composition. CoinNudge stores timestamped hourly observations so every displayed change can be reproduced from known baselines without inventing unavailable history.
After deployment, one-day data appears first, then seven-day and 30-day changes. Until then the cell stays blank and the page explains the warm-up state.
When is a Bitcoin-dominance alert useful?
A useful alert identifies the old and new share, change in percentage points, observation window and whether breadth or altcoin relative performance agrees. A tiny unchanged fluctuation should not create repeated Telegram noise.
Dominance is regime context. It does not tell a user to rotate into Bitcoin or sell altcoins.
Can I infer money moved from altcoins into Bitcoin when dominance rises?
Not from market-cap share alone. Bitcoin dominance can rise because altcoin prices fall faster, supply estimates change or the provider's market-cap universe changes.
CoinNudge's stored history starts when observations were captured. Missing historical dominance checkpoints are not reconstructed from today's share.
- Compare BTC and altcoin price direction alongside the share change.
- Retain the provider denominator and snapshot time for every observation.
- Use independent executed-flow or market-participation data for a separate rotation hypothesis.

| Dominance changed over a local window. | Aligned stored observations. | Missing baselines stay unavailable. |
| Market-cap concentration and altcoin breadth agree or conflict. | Separate linked datasets. | No combined forecast score is created. |

Method and data boundary
CoinNudge requests CoinGecko's global cryptocurrency market data every ten minutes and stores one observation per UTC hour for 32 days. Bitcoin and Ethereum shares use the provider's market-cap percentages. The stablecoin subtotal adds only USDT and USDC provider shares; Other equals 100 minus BTC, ETH and that named subtotal. Changes are arithmetic percentage-point differences against the closest local observation to 24 hours, seven days or 30 days, within a 90-minute alignment tolerance.
Dominance inherits CoinGecko's asset universe, circulating-supply estimates and classifications. USDT plus USDC is not all stablecoins. Percentage-point change is unavailable during baseline warm-up, and dominance alone does not identify altcoin breadth, capital flow or future returns.

Frequently asked questions
What is Bitcoin dominance?
Bitcoin market capitalization divided by the provider's total cryptocurrency market capitalization.
Does rising dominance mean BTC price is rising?
No. It is a relative share and can rise while BTC falls less than other assets.
Are changes percentages?
They are arithmetic percentage-point changes in market share.
Why can 7-day or 30-day change be blank?
CoinNudge has not yet accumulated a sufficiently aligned local baseline.
Does the stablecoin figure include every stablecoin?
No. It explicitly includes USDT and USDC only.
Is dominance the same as altcoin season?
No. Dominance is market-cap weighted; CoinNudge's Altcoin Season score is equal-vote relative-performance breadth.
