Bitcoin Moving Averages: Does Confirmation Make a Better Entry?

Quick answer

A Bitcoin moving average can describe trend context, but it is not a dependable standalone buy signal. Across 1,651 eligible Binance BTC daily states, the fully aligned price-above-rising-SMA200/SMA50-above-SMA200 group had −0.98% median net next-30-day return (740 complete observations). Only four golden crosses matured: two gained and two lost at 30 days, with +0.21% median; all four gained at 90 days, an exploratory result rather than reliable future odds. Keep price location, slope, alignment and execution risk separate; overlapping days are not independent trades.

Bitcoin moving averages: what did the buy-signal tests show?

  • Price above a rising SMA200 with SMA50 alignment did not establish a positive typical 30-day entry: −0.98% median across 740 completed observations.
  • Four completed golden crosses split two positive and two negative at 30 days; this tiny cohort cannot estimate reliable future odds.
  • Completed-close features precede the next UTC open entry; 0.20% per side costs and pending outcomes are explicit.

Is Bitcoin above its 200-day moving average a buy signal?

It is a description of price location, not a validated buy instruction. The experiment separates location, seven-day slope and SMA50 alignment. In the fully aligned state, the median net next-30-day return was −0.98% across 740 completed day observations. The median next-90-day result was +1.09%. Both can be true because a trend label does not specify entry price, horizon or acceptable loss.

The strongest-looking 30-day group—price above a non-rising SMA200—had +25.07% median across only 57 adjacent observations. That is a warning about regime concentration, not a reason to optimize a new entry rule on this same history. The annual table and non-overlap check show why many days in one transition are not many independent market cycles.

Our four completed golden crosses had a +0.21% median net next-30-day outcome, with two positive and two negative. All four were positive at 90 days, but four clustered events are exploratory and cannot support a 100% future win claim. Use averages to organize the market context, then separately test execution, invalidation and account risk.

What do SMA50, SMA200, slope and a golden cross actually measure?

SMA50 is the arithmetic mean of the last 50 completed UTC daily closes; SMA200 averages the last 200. The slope diagnostic compares today’s SMA200 with its value seven completed days earlier: SMA200[t]/SMA200[t−7]−1. Price exactly equal to SMA200 is not above it, zero slope is not rising, and SMA50 equality is not positive alignment.

A golden cross is SMA50 moving from at/below SMA200 to above it on a completed close. A death cross is the opposite sign change. We enumerate every such event, without selecting a cooldown based on its later return. Price distance from SMA200 and the already completed prior-30-day change are separate descriptive fields; they do not measure an investor’s actual missed profits.

Daily SMA200, a 200-week moving average and a 200-bar four-hour average have different clocks and memory. This experiment does not test weekly, four-hour or fifteen-minute profitability, nor claim these exact periods are optimal. An EMA changes weights; it is not interchangeable with the SMA values in this study.

How was the Bitcoin moving-average experiment performed?

We queried local retrospective official Binance BTCUSDT daily files for September 1, 2021 through October 1, 2026 inclusive. A complete 207-day feature window is required to compute both 200-day levels and the seven-day change. The first 206 target dates lack that window and are excluded, not filled. The 1,651 eligible decision dates actually begin 2022-03-26 and end 2026-10-01.

A decision uses the day’s completed close; a hypothetical purchase occurs at the next UTC day’s open. A 30-day outcome exits at the open 31 days after the decision; 90-day outcomes exit at day 91. Reference return is exit/entry × 0.998/1.002 − 1, allowing 0.20% per side. Marked drawdown starts at 1, includes each intervening close net of hypothetical disposal cost and the final reference exit, and uses the running peak.

There are 3,180 complete horizon rows and 122 pending rows. Pending results remain null; they are not losses, zero gains or quietly discarded cases. Each eligible day belongs to one state per horizon. These conditional observations are not the trades of a continuous account—summing overlapping returns would be invalid.

The recovered files include event, later observation and ingestion clocks. They do not prove we possessed the archive at each historical decision. This study is retrospective, spot-only and single-venue; it does not model leverage, funding, a tick queue, exchange failure or future profitability.

Were Bitcoin golden crosses late—and did they all work?

The complete four-event golden-cross table reports already realized prior price change, distance from SMA200 and both later horizons. All four are shown; the charts select worst, middle-index and best 30-day golden outcomes by return then date. These outcome-based illustration labels cannot be known in advance and are not a selection strategy.

The unsuccessful 2023-02-07 example is the essential counterexample: confirming the lagging average alignment did not prevent a negative subsequent 30-day reference return. The 2024-10-28 successful path shows why rejecting every late confirmation also misses genuine extensions. A rising past does not identify which future path you will receive.

Waiting for a moving-average crossing necessarily uses prices already included in those averages. The prior-30-day move quantifies what had happened before the event, not the performance of a competing early-entry strategy. A fair early-versus-confirmed comparison needs frozen paired opportunity selection, fill, stop and exit rules.

Does waiting for a Bitcoin golden cross mean buying much higher?

Confirmation can arrive after a substantial price rise, but the rise before a cross is not the measured cost of waiting from a specific earlier signal. In the five dated cross observations below, prior-30-day price changes ranged from +6.23% to +35.69%; the latest cross still has pending forward outcomes.

The 2023-02-07 cross followed a +35.69% preceding 30-day move but had a −12.74% net next-30-day result. The 2024-10-28 cross followed a smaller +6.23% move and had a +36.47% net next-30-day result. These contrasting cases show why “already rose a lot” and “now confirmed” cannot separately determine the next return.

There are only four matured crosses, with two positive and two negative 30-day outcomes. This sample does not establish the best entry delay. Earlier price availability and the exact earlier rule must be specified before comparing immediate entry with waiting.

How would you fairly test buying now versus waiting for moving-average confirmation?

Start both arms from the same time-available initial signal and a common capital budget. Freeze what confirmation means—for example one completed close meeting specified conditions—and execute only at the next allowed price. Compare both arms to the same ending time, not 30 days after each different entry.

Retain initial signals that never confirm. In the waiting arm those remain cash or the explicitly stated alternative allocation. In the immediate arm record its real path risk. A comparison containing only successful confirmations selects survivors and overstates the usefulness of waiting.

Report entry-price premium, missed gains, drawdown before and after confirmation, cash deployment and net account outcome under common costs. The existing study compares descriptive states and crossing outcomes, not this paired immediate-versus-wait policy. No paired advantage is claimed in this edition.

What extra evidence would make a moving-average confirmation more useful?

Useful additional evidence should address a different question: market participation, price location and executable risk. Multiple averages of the same close series are correlated measurements, not three independent confirmations. Define the intended role of each feature before counting agreement.

For a long setup, an explicit stop location, distance to invalidation and position size matter even when price is above SMA200. Volume or participation can add context, but no combination here has a measured incremental win rate beyond the published daily-state study.

Use the historical table as a reason to distinguish context from an order. Inspect both the profitable and failed cross paths, then test any new entry policy on later untouched data. Changing the daily average to 15-minute EMA changes the experiment rather than validating the old result.

Do death crosses reverse the golden-cross result?

All golden and death crossings are included below at both horizons. Positive returns after a death cross are a counterexample to treating its label as a deterministic sell signal. Both event sets have only four completed events per horizon and overlapping macro regimes; these are exploratory descriptions, not comparable independent strategy win rates.

The percentage of positive observations is the observed fraction in this tiny cohort, not calibrated probability. Switching into short positions, using leverage or timing exits at the next opposite cross would be different policies that are not tested by these fixed-horizon spot returns.

Does the apparent moving-average advantage survive different years?

The table includes every year × state cell, including empty cells. Adjacent days in a single rally share nearly the same 30-day outcome. A high daily observation count in one transition can therefore create an apparently impressive median without independent evidence from many cycles.

Compare each cell’s sample size and path drawdown before interpreting the full-period ranking. Empty cells mean unavailable comparisons, not zero returns. Fewer than twenty observations are exploratory; a larger count can still be highly dependent. This is a descriptive stratification, not an out-of-sample model selection test.

What do overlapping days, confidence intervals and non-overlap change?

For the 30-day median, we resample the complete daily sequence in 30-observation circular blocks, 500 draws using NumPy PCG64 seed 20261002. Every draw starts at random sequence positions, wraps at the end, truncates to original length and then regroups sampled days by their original state. Intervals use linear 2.5/97.5 percentiles. They estimate sensitivity to this sample’s time clustering—not future trade-win probabilities.

A separate sensitivity keeps 90-day decision anchors measured from the fixed September 1, 2021 calendar origin. Their outcomes do not overlap, but the subgroups contain only 0–8 observations. The transient non-rising-SMA200 state has none. That means its unusually strong overlapping result lacks confirmation in this check; it is not proof of failure or success.

The anchor sample is not a tuned best month. Do not optimize block size, anchor origin or state cutoffs after seeing results and report the best one as the primary finding. Neither this bootstrap nor the annual splits remove the limited number of underlying market cycles.

How should a trader use moving averages without treating them as automatic orders?

First identify the chart interval and whether the candle is complete. Then record location, slope, alignment and price distance separately. A long-term uptrend with a highly extended price is a different entry problem from a fresh reclaim; several average-based labels still derive from the same price series.

Next verify actual spot participation, spread/depth, invalidation and account risk. Technical agreement cannot repair stale data or pay a wide spread. If the only reason to enter is that every moving-average line is green, the negative aligned-state 30-day median is a reason to demand a more precise tested entry—not to invent a short signal.

For an experimental strategy, freeze entries, exits, costs, sizing and missing-data rules, then test on a held-out or later period. This report deliberately does not declare a best SMA or profitable live rule. Current technical alerts and our separate breakout-confirmation study help monitor conditions; they do not execute this retrospective state comparison.

How can you reproduce these Bitcoin moving-average results?

Start with the public input CSV, order by UTC daily event_time, apply the 207-day eligibility rule and calculate the exact formulas above. Compare the full feature and outcome ledgers before aggregating. Include initial marked equity in drawdown, keep pending null and apply next-open timing rather than a same-close shortcut.

The protocol specifies state equality boundaries, crossing direction, fixed costs, deterministic case selection and bootstrap mechanics. The manifest fixes SHA-256 for all files. The independent audit uses separate arithmetic, does not import the producer and checks state/return/drawdown calculations, every group and the bootstrap intervals.

Public evidence is enough to recalculate this study; it is not a license to assume broader paid catalog coverage or historical executable order books. Historical input recovery, present-day snapshots and actual contemporaneous PIT records are different products and remain labelled.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bitcoin above SMA200 an automatic buy?

No. In this retrospective sample the fully aligned group had a −0.98% median net next-30-day return across 740 completed daily observations. It describes a state, not a validated entry strategy.

What was the golden-cross win rate?

Two of four completed events had positive net 30-day reference outcomes; all four had positive 90-day outcomes. Four clustered events are exploratory and neither fraction is a reliable future win probability.

Is the 200-day average the same as the 200-week average?

No. The unit is the chart interval; 200 daily closes and 200 weekly closes cover different histories. Only daily SMA50/SMA200 is tested here.

Why not buy at the close that creates the cross?

The crossing is known only after that close. The experiment enters at the following UTC open and exits at the common specified horizon after costs.

Did the strongest state survive the non-overlap check?

The above-but-not-rising-SMA200 state had 57 overlapping completed 30-day days, but zero observations in the fixed 90-day anchor sensitivity. That check cannot confirm its apparent advantage.

Did you test immediate entry against waiting for a golden cross?

No. The existing experiment measures daily states and crossing outcomes. This update defines a paired test but does not invent results for the unrun immediate-versus-wait arms.

Is the preceding 30-day rise the cost of waiting?

No. Waiting cost needs a specific earlier eligible signal, its executable price, the confirmation price and common-horizon account outcomes. A prior-30-day return alone is not that comparison.
